Primary Source Activities: National Anti-Mob and Lynch Law Association Brochure

Allow students, in groups or individually, to examine the primary source linked under Resources to the right, while answering the questions below in order. The questions are designed to guide students into a deeper analysis of the source and sharpen associated cognitive skills.

Level I: Description

2. How many pages are in this brochure and what is the size of those pages?
3. What kind of information is found on pages on 3-4?

Level II: Interpretation
1. What are the purposes and goals of the association described in this brochure? What is lynching?
2. What rights does the association think should protect the U.S. citizen against lynching?
3. What details indicate when and for whom this brochure was written?

Level III: Analysis
1. How does this brochure illustrate the legal rights of petition and assembly?
2. How might African-Americans and white Americans react differently to reading this brochure?
3. Why do you think the brochure quotes the people listed in pages 3-4?
