Primary Source Activities: Mounted Police and Strikers Stand-Off

Description

Allow students, in groups or individually, to examine the primary source linked under Resources to the right, while answering the questions below in order. The questions are designed to guide students into a deeper analysis of the source and sharpen associated cognitive skills.

Level I: Description
1. Examine the picture carefully and tell what you see in it.
2. What do you think this picture is showing?
3. What differences do you see among the people shown here?

Level II: Interpretation
1. Can you guess when this picture may have been taken by looking at the people in it?
2. Look at the clothing that they are wearing. Does this give you any clues bout the time period?

Level III: Analysis
1. Look carefully at the building and cars in the background. Are you able to draw any conclusions about the picture from these items? Where do you think this photograph may have been taken?
2. Study the center of the picture. Do you see men on horseback? Why do you think the people are gathered in this position?
3. What do you think is going on in this picture?
