The Summer Institute is a graduate-level weeklong seminar that offers participating teachers the opportunity to work closely with a number of the nation's leading scholars. All events are held at the OSU Columbus campus. You can find additional campus maps here.
OSU faculty members will lecture, lead discussions of common readings, examine primary source documents, and engage teachers in debate and interpretation of recent scholarship and historical methods. You can find more information in this letter from the Project Director. Click here to see a detailed schedule.
The theme of our Summer Institute is “Technology, Work, and Daily Life.” Through plenary and elective sessions we will explore this theme from a variety of angles and in a variety of time periods. Among our presenters will be Christopher Clark, from the University of Connecticut. Your reading and writing assignment is here.
We encourage all participants to be residential scholars. You will be staying at Nosker House, on the OSU Columbus campus. However, we recognize that many of you may have to, or prefer to, commute from home. Use this sheet to compute your mileage for either option.
Please make sure you activate your computer access account BEFORE arriving on campus. Here's how. This will improve your ability to work on your group projects.
At the conclusion of the institute, teachers will present completed group projects. These projects will be modeled on History Day projects. Your group will create a documentary, exhibit, or performance about a topic based on one of our core themes.
Participating teachers receive graduate credit in history for satisfactory participation.
